Professor Henryk Filcek (1928–2011)

Mining geomechanics

He was born in Niemczyk. He studied at the University of Mining and Metallurgy in the years 1947–1952. He received a doctor’s degree in 1960 and postdoctoral qualifications in 1965; he was appointed associate professor in 1971 and became a full professor in 1978.

He had been working at the university uninterruptedly since 1949. He chaired the Department of Mining Mechanics (1967–1969), was director of the Institute of Mining Geomechanics (1969–1982), vice-dean (1966–1969) and dean (1969–1972) of the Faculty of Mining, and vice-rector in the years 1972–1974.

Professor Filcek was a member of an international committee that organised the world’s mining convention. He authored nearly 70 papers on mining geomechanics.
