The plaque was unveiled on 8th April 2019 during the opening of the exhibition “In magnis voluisse sat est | In big things it's enough to just have the will – Mining Academy’s history of establishment”, which was one of the main events of the celebrations of the Jubilee of 100 years of AGH UST. The plaque is made of olive green granite from the Republic of South Africa, and the Professor’s bust is made of bronze.

The honour is awarded to the retired employees of AGH UST who have contributed to the development of the university. The number of living individuals honoured with the distinction must not exceed ten.

The plaque is made of a granite rock from the Tatra Mountains obtained by highlanders from a stream in the Chochołowska Valley, contains a bronze bust of Professor W. Goetel. The unveiling of the plaque took place on 4th October 1975.
