Professor Antoni Stanisław Kleczkowski (1922–2006)

He was born in Poznań. He studied at the University of Mining and Metallurgy and the Jagiellonian University. In 1950, he received a Master of Science degree at the AGH and in 1951 obtained a Master’s degree in the field of philosophy at the Jagiellonian University. He was a senior lecturer (1963), associate professor (1972), and full professor (1979).

Already in his second year at the AGH (1946), he took the position of junior assistant, then he became an aspirant and assistant (1946–1964), senior lecturer and professor (1972). He chaired the Department of Hydrogeology and held the position of vice-director and director of the Institute of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology (1974–1981). He was the first Rector in the post-war period elected “by will and choice of the academic community”. He retired in 1992.

Professor Kleczkowski was a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, as well as numerous Polish and foreign scientific societies and associations, such as the Polish Geological Society. He was the chairperson of a state council concerned with environmental protection. He was conferred the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by his alma mater (1994) and the Faculté Polytechnique de Mons (Belgium).  Professor Kleczkowski authored about 300 papers, including about 121 in co-authorship (in 48 languages) in the fields of hydrogeology, geology, and environmental protection.
