When the Senate of the Mining Academy appointed the first Council of the Faculty of Metallurgical Engineering on May 21, 1922, metallurgy became a new separate discipline. Throughout its long history, the faculty name has changed several times. Currently, it is the Faculty of Metals Engineering and Industrial Computer Science.

Today, the organisational structure of the faculty is based on departments conducting research and education activities in the following fields: materials engineering, applied computer science, metallurgy, education in technology and computer science, heat engineering, and computational engineering.

The current research interests of the faculty, as well as its education offer, revolve around extractive metallurgy, materials science, metal forming, heat engineering, environmental protection, computer-aided modelling of metallurgical processes, and industrial computer science.

The faculty collaborates with Polish research centres of similar nature: the Faculty of Materials Science at the Silesian University of Technology in Katowice, the Faculty of Production Engineering and Materials Technology at the Częstochowa University of Technology, the Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Krakow, and the Institute of Iron Metallurgy in Gliwice, to name a few. International collaboration includes long-term research contacts with industry, universities, and research institutes. The faculty also collaborates with industry by participating in research projects and industrial training, as well as updating first- and second-cycle programmes of study.

Faculty alumni easily find employment in the following industries: metallurgical, processing, machine construction, automotive, shipbuilding, energy, electronics; as well as in laboratories and research institutes. The faculty educates specialists in computer science who unrestrainedly apply the newest programming techniques and merge their source codes with the existing commercial coding, and who are able to adapt various types of software to specific needs of industry.

Graduates of the Education in Technology and Computer Science programme of study can work in all types of educational institutions, including universities. They are also prepared to give lectures and training in applied and industrial computer science during courses organised by various organisations, companies, and institutions.
