Streszczenie

Adsorption is the phenomenon of the adhesion of atoms, ions and molecules to the surface of a solid. Microporous materials, such as zeolites or metal-organic frameworks, are solids whose structure is crossed by a network of channels and/or cavities with pore diameters below 2 nm. This size of pores is comparable to the size of the guest molecules resulting in unique adsorption properties of microporous materials. Microporous materials are crucial for many technological processes, such as removing pollutants, controlling humidity, heterogenous catalysis, gas separation, water purification etc. In recent years, new types of adsorbents are being intensively studied for potential applications for H2 storage, direct CO2 capture, drug delivery, heat pumps or water harvesting. In this seminar, experimental methods of adsorption measurements and theoretical models used to describe and interpret the data will be discussed. I will also show what Monte Carlo calculations are in the context of adsorption applications. The use of molecular Monte Carlo simulations to model the adsorption process will also be shown.
