Autonomous car from AGH UST


The scientists and students of the AGH UST Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering have built an autonomous vehicle, capable of recognising road signs and obstacles. The role of a person will be restricted to being a passenger.  

 

The autonomous car from AGH UST was created at the AGH UST-Delphi Laboratory of Autonomous Vehicles under the supervision of Marek Długosz, DSc, and Paweł Skruch, DSc.   

 

“Advanced autonomy of the car is manifested by its moving from point A to point B without the participation of a driver, not causing any accidents, and obeying traffic rules,” explain Mateusz Orłowski, one of the students involved in the project.  
“The vehicle is equipped with a system for detecting pedestrians. The moment a pedestrian steps in front of the car, the vehicle is able to react and stop,” says Dr Marek Długosz.  

 

At the current stage, a prototype of the electric car Delphi EVE-1 is equipped with a radar, a camera, and a computer controlling the entire vehicle. In the future, the constructors are planning to equip the car with some additional components which will ensure that it has even more “senses”. They will be additional cameras, a GPS module, an accelerometer, a magnetometer, and a gyroscope.     

 

The Delphi Corporation, a partner of AGH UST, supports car producers in speeding up the process of autonomous cars appearing on the roads. In 2015, the company demonstrated the technology of active safety and automated driving on a route in North America that so far has been the longest. The journey through the USA began on 22nd March near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and finished in New York eight days later, after covering the distance of 5,600 kilometres without an accident.
