3 silver medals for Aero Team ILK AGH UST

We are pleased to inform that AGH UST students, making their debut at SAE Aero Design in California, finished the competition with an excellent result, winning in total 3 silver medals.

 

At the competition, which was held on 24-26 April, 2015, Aero Team ILK AGH UST won three silver medals:  

• in the general classification in the class “Advanced” (coming second after the University of Akron, USA),
• for the technical report,
• for the highest precision of airdrop.

 

The AGH University of Science and Technology was represented by the students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics: Tomasz Frąk, Piotr Górny, Adrian Stępień, Patryk Straś, Artur Szwed, and Piotr Wiśniowski. The students’ supervisor at the field of study of Mechatronics was professor Tadeusz Uhl.

 

“In the opinion of many jurors, we had the most technologically advanced model made entirely of composites. I hope that after such a successful debut, next year we will win a gold medal,” estimated professor Uhl.

 

The task of young engineers from all over the world (76 teams from the USA, India, Japan, Mexico, China, and other countries) was to build a remotely operated model of the so-called “cargo aircraft”. The aircraft compete in three categories: Micro, Regular, and Advanced. The models are assessed, inter alia, by the representatives of NASA and Boeing, and the winning team is the one that has managed to take the heaviest weight into the air (at the lowest weight of the model itself). In the competition, other aspects are also taken into account: the presentation of the model (including the evaluation of materials used in the construction), and the precision with which the load carried by the aircraft is dropped on target on the ground.

 

Polish technical universities dominated the competition. The best result was the one of the Warsaw University of Technology, whose students have taken part in the competition since 1991. An impressive number of medals was also won by the students of the Poznan University of Technology.
