Researchers from AGH UST, taking full advantage of nanotechnologies, develop new products and solutions which are later used by large international companies. An example is a long-standing collaboration between the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering, and a Japanese company Rigaku Corporation.
The company specializes in the development of equipment for the needs of diffractometry and X-ray spectrometry. Rigaku's products are sold all over the world and used in material testing, product quality control, as well as in the automotive, electronic, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, crime detection, and others. Thanks to multi-channel integrated circuits designed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering, new generations of ultra-fast X-ray cameras are developed, such as D/teX Ultra (pic. 1), which increase the precision of measurement while shortening measurement time.
In the mid-2014s a new product being the result of collaboration between AGH UST and Rigaku appeared on the international market. It is a two-dimensional X-ray pixel camera called HyPix-3000 (pic. 2). The core element of the camera are 16 single-purpose integrated circuits PXD18k designed at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering, where each circuit contains 40 million transistors. Camera HyPix-3000 belongs to the fastest cameras of this type in the world, and additionally, it is capable of recording photons of precisely determined energy, as well as continuous reading.
The coordinator of the research project at AGH UST is professor Paweł Gryboś from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering.
High-tech projects in the field of microelectronics accomplished at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering conquer not only the global markets, but they are also presented at the most prestigious international scientific and industrial conferences. The result of conducted research projects are also joint patent applications (for example, WO2012077217A1, WO2012077218A1). Furthermore, AGH UST students and doctoral students regularly take part in industrial trainings and apprenticeships in Japan.
