Another medal for ultrafast X-ray camera

We are pleased to inform that an invention of scientists and researchers of the AGH UST Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering has been honoured again. The ultrafast X-ray camera won a silver medal at the International Trade Fair “iENA 2015” Ideas, Inventions, New Products, which took place between 29 October and 1 November, 2015, in Nuremberg. 

 

The “Device for ultrafast X-ray imaging” was developed by professor Paweł Gryboś, professor Robert Szczygieł, Krzysztof Kasiński, DSc, and Piotr Maj, DSc. 

 

The compact ultrafast X-ray camera is a device which can record a 75 µm × 75 µm image made of 65,536 pixels with the speed of 20,000 frames per second. Each photon is processed individually by a detection module which has a surface area of 20 mm × 20 mm. The device enables the registration of impulses within a selected energy range, which results in the quality improvement of the recorded image. The camera can be used in new generation detection systems which use X-radiation (for example, in material tests, the analysis of chemical compounds, and medical imaging). An important part of the invention is a hybrid, pixel detection module – the heart of the camera, which can be easily used to build a detector of a large surface, which makes the range of potential applications even wider. Communication with the module is performed via standard interfaces: Ethernet, USB, Camera-Link. 

 

This year, for the first time Poland has been invited to take part in the fair as a partner country. In this way, the fair organisers wanted to draw attention of the representatives of international companies, research institutes, industry, business groups and a large number of visitors to an increase of investment in research and development in our country. They also emphasized a high quality of the Polish scientific-research background and infrastructure, political stabilisation, and a good economic environment. At the fair, over 750 solutions from 36 countries were presented, including nearly 30 developments from Poland. 

 

Let’s remind the readers that the ultrafast camera also won a medal at the International Warsaw Invention Show “IWIS 2015”. Moreover, at the International Invention Show & Technomart “INST 2015” in Taipei, the jury honoured the “Ultrafast camera for noise-free digital imaging with the use of X-radiation” – an invention based on the same integrated circuit.
