A research team from the Department of Computer Science at the Faculty of Computer Science, Electronics and Telecommunications together with ACK Cyfronet, implementing the Onedata system, took the 3rd place in the T-Systems Big Data Challenge category of an international competition which was carried out within the framework of the Copernicus programme.
The award-winning system was developed by the team comprising: Prof. Jacek Kitowski, Łukasz Dutka, PhD, Renata Słota, PhD, Darin Nikolow, PhD, Stanisław Polka, PhD, Michał Wrzeszcz, MSc, Rafał Słota, Łukasz Opioła, Tomasz Lichoń, Krzysztof Trzepla, Konrad Zemek and Maciej Mazur.
Onedata is a system providing uniform and effective access to data stored in organizationally dispersed environments. It is to aid not only administrators being in charge of storage systems of data available within the infrastructure of particular centres, such as PL-Grid Infrastructure, but also this infrastructure users. A unique characteristic of the Onedata system is its capacity to flexibly integrate data from different resources, both public and private ones, and from different types of resources , e.g. file systems, databases and cloud resources, into one logical, user-configured data space.
Copernicus is an Earth and environment monitoring programme co-financed by, inter alia, the European Union. The Copernicus Masters competition has been held yearly since 2011 and it promotes innovative solutions for business and society, related to handling data received from Earth observation. In this year’s , 6th edition of the competition, in nine categories, 171 submissions were received from 43 countries.
