Traditionally, the top positions in the ranking were taken by US universities. Harvard University was ranked first, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

The preparation of the “Webometrics Ranking of World Universities” is carried out by the Spanish National Research Council in Madrid (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas). This largest academic ranking of schools of higher education, which primarily takes into account universities’ communication activities over the Internet, is updated every six months. “Webometrics” is therefore slightly different from standard rankings, which evaluate the scientific capacity of particular universities.

The web indexes applied to the ranking are based on and correlated with conventional scientometric and bibliometric indexes. The ranking measures the capacity, visibility and influence of university websites, with a particular emphasis on scientific and research achievements (references to publications, delivering presentations at conferences, monographs, studies, and reports). It also takes into account other materials, such as class, lecture, seminar and workshop materials, digital libraries, databases, multimedia, and personal websites. “Webometrics” also evaluates general information concerning a given institution, its departments and research groups.
