We have officially begun academic year 2016/2017
On 4th October, 2016, the AGH University of Science and Technology hosted the opening ceremony of the academic year 2016/2017. Professor Tadeusz Słomka, AGH UST Rector, admitted that the year would be full of challenges, hard work and learning, but he also expressed a belief that it would bring a lot of satisfaction, joy, and success.
The ceremony began with a holy mass at St Anna’s Collegiate Church, celebrated by Bp. Tadeusz Pieronek.
In the Main Hall of the university, after Gaude Mater Polonia was performed by the AGH UST Song and Dance Ensemble "Krakus", professor Tadeusz Słomka, AGH UST Rector, opened a ceremonial session of the Senate and welcomed the guests – national, voivodeship and local authorities, the representatives of science and industry, as well as the employees and students of the university.
At the beginning of his speech, the AGH UST Rector thanked all employees and students of our Alma Mater for their support and hard work in the last four years. The next term of office will be a continuation of the process that started in 2012.
“In the coming years, we consequently have to strengthen our position both in Poland and on the international arena. It will not be possible without excellent collaboration between faculties, departments, students, graduates and employees, but I am sure that similarly to the recent years, we will fulfil our aims,” said the AGH UST Rector, and he also added that “A constant improvement of the level of education, the enhancement of the quality of scientific research, as well as the extension and improvement of the standard of facilities, and working in even closer collaboration with industry and business are the priorities of the former and current term in office.”
In his speech, professor Tadeusz Słomka emphasized the fact that educating students is one of the most important aspects of the university’s activity, and that in order to meet the needs of the labour market, the AGH University of Science and Technology constantly extends its educational offer.
The AGH UST Rector also addressed the new students:
“Choosing AGH UST, you have made an excellent choice. You have chosen a university of great reputation and traditions, but also a very modern university. Today, AGH UST is one of the best technical universities in Poland and in our part of Europe, with a profile more and more corresponding to a Technical University.”
The next speaker was professor Aleksander Bobko, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
The most important part of the ceremony was the matriculation of first-year students, which was led by professor Wojciech Łużny, AGH UST Vice-Rector for Education. Each AGH UST faculty was represented by two new students, who took a solemn oath on behalf of themselves and their fellows.
After the performance of Gaudeamus Igitur by the Choir of Song and Dance Ensemble "Krakus", professor Tadeusz Słomka wished all new students a lot of success and diligence in their everyday effort of student life.
“Please do not forget that education is something that nearly everyone is given, many pass it on, but very few possess,” he added.
During the ceremony there was also a presentation of the most important awards and scholarships. Professor Andrzej R. Pach, AGH UST Vice-Rector for Science, announced the laureates of the Professor Władysław Takliński Award, the Professor Antoni Rodziewicz-Bielewicz Award, and the Professor Zbigniew Engel Award. Professor Anna Siwik, AGH UST Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, led the ceremony of handing over “AGH UST Diamonds”, as well as the scholarships of the Helena and Tadeusz Zielińscy Foundation for Educational Support to Young People in Jarosław.
Next, professor Jerzy Lis, AGH UST Vice-Rector for Cooperation, read out congratulatory letters.
In her inauguration lecture entitled “Chordophones – characteristics of string instruments”, professor Maria Maj, an associate professor at the Faculty of Foundry Engineering, illustrated different types of string instruments, described the ways they produce sound and the resulting classification of string instruments, i.e. chordophones, and she also presented the basic issues concerning acoustics, which are inseparable from describing sound and the reception of music.
The ceremony concluded with the national anthem performed by the AGH UST Representative Orchestra.
