Sonderaktion Krakau Anniversary – Academic Remembrance Day


On November 6, 2021, 82 years will have passed since the flagitious action of the Gestapo later named ‘Sonderaktion Krakau’. The academic community of Krakow commemorates this even by observing the Academic Remembrance Day. This year, it is November 5. 

Schedule

  • At 9:00 – Rakowice Cemetery, Salwator Cemetery
    Laying of flowers on graves of deceased professors of Krakow universities

  • At 11:00 – Jagiellonian University Collegium Novum
    Address of the JU Rector, Professor Jacek Popiel, poetry recitation by Professor Dorota Segda, Rector of the National Academy of Theatre Arts, Remembrance Appeal, laying of wreaths under memorial plaques in the JU Collegium Novum and the Oak of Freedom

  • At 19:30 – St. Anna’s Collegiate Church
    Mass for the intention of Soneraktion Krakau victims, fallen during the Second World War, as well as all late professors, staff, students, and doctoral students from all universities in Krakow and Małopolska Province who had died in the previous year.


During the treacherous action directed at Polish intelligentsia, the German authorities arrested 183 Krakow professors and academic teachers, including 22 members of the Mining Academy. The scientists were transported to concentration camps in Sachsenhausen and Dachau, where two prominent lives were lost: the first Rector of the Mining Academy, Professor Antoni Hoborski, and Professor Władysław Takliński, Rector of the Mining Academy in the years 1933–1939 died there.

Since 2015, all Krakow universities have observed the anniversary of this tragic event together.
