Abstract

Nowadays, the advanced materials in electronics, medicine, biology require not only the use of new types of chemical compounds but also arranging them in the appropriate form to achieve or enhance demanded properties. The upcoming seminar will show different methods of surface modification using surface-grafted polymer brushes. Polymer brushes are ordered surface coatings of polymer chains tethered by one end to a surface keeping extended conformation of the chains due to mutual interactions of neighboring densely grafted chains. They comprise the advantages of both thin films and self-assembled monolayers (facile preparations, versatility in the applied compounds) and they provide important adjustable macromolecular parameters (molar mass, grafting density, crosslinking ratio), multifunctional character and easy susceptibility for modifications, the possibility of shape and conformation changes triggered by an external stimulus. I will present a new concept of ladder-like conductive brushes able to run a light-harvest process and conduct electricity in the perpendicular direction to the surface. Moreover, I will show brushes platforms behaving as advanced nanocontainers able to controlled substance release. Finally, smart stimuli-responsive polymer brushes used as cancer cell culture scaffolds will be presented.
