Online seminar: Electronically Isolated Atomic Sb Chains on Si(553) Surface


The AGH UST Academic Center for Materials and Nanotechnology invites to a virtual seminar in the series “Krakow Condensed Matter Seminar” which will be held on June 16th 2021, at 9.00 am.

Abstract

It will be shown how the surfactant phenomenon can be used for synthesis monoatomic Sb chains on vicinal Si(553) surfaces. We show that the surfactant causes the modification surface energy Si and Sb, facilitates the formation of atomic chains Sb without any outdiffusion of Si atoms. As a result, the surface consists of alternately arranged atomic chains of Sb and Pb. Combining atomistic modeling within density functional theory (DFT) with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we show that the formed chains of Sb are strongly compressed, and at the same time electronically isolated, exhibiting nearly textbook one-dimensional free electron behavior.
