Lecture: Engineering Space Mission Support at Los Alamos National Laboratory

The AGH UST Space Technology Centre invites you to participate in a lecture given by Dr Charles Farrar, director of the Engineering Institute at the National Security Education Center in Los Alamos. The event takes place on November 16, 2021, at 17:00.

The lecturer will present a short history of space missions support, which the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has been organising since the 1950s. Dr Charles Farrar will focus on:

• General overview of work connected with space at LANL
• Early work of the laboratory: Vela satellites (discovered Gamma radiation flairs), nuclear energy-powered rocket, Beam Aboard rocket (BEAR – neutral particle beam accelerator)
• Space power: radioisotope thermoelectric generators, KRUSTY reactor for the crewed Mars mission, SP100 space reactor (application of thermal piping)
• Space instruments: Alexis (an example of an engineering malfunction during take-off), instruments of Forte, Mars Curiosity, and Perseverance Rover
• CubeSats
• Science of signature
• Collaboration between LANL and the Polish Academy of Sciences in the field of space exploration
• Future activities
