On 8th March, 2012, Kawiory no. 21 hosted a ceremony of the official opening of one of the largest investments of the AGH University of Science and Technology in recent years - the AGH UST Centre of Computer Science.

AGH UST Centre of Computer Science

The AGH UST Centre of Computer Science is a teaching-research unit, and its usable space is 7,250 square metres. The investment, whose total cost amounted to more that 60m PLN, was financed by the Małopolska Regional Operational Programme, and its completion took less than two years. The main contractor of the investment is the consortium Mostostal Warszawa S.A. - Wrobis S.A. 15 modern laboratories have been equipped with state-of-the-art devices, which will allow AGH UST to educate students of Computer Science at the international level. Two amphitheatre rooms (250 and 150 seats) and over a dozen classrooms make up a place friendly to future computer scientists.

The ceremonial opening of the Centre featured professor Antoni Tajduś, AGH UST Rector, professor Krzysztof Zieliński, Head of the Department of Computer Science, as well as invited guests, for example, Marek Sowa, Małopolska Voivodeship Marshal, Jerzy Miller, Voivode of Małopolska, the representatives of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, as well as many representatives of the IT industry (for example, Cisco, Google, Motorola, IBM, HP, Delphi, Solidex).

The opening lecture was delivered by professor Andy Hopper of the University of Cambridge (Cambridge Computer Laboratory), who is a world-class specialist in the field of Computer Science. The guests visited the laboratory for data visualisation and creating interaction in three-dimensional space, the laboratory for processing multimedia streams, and the laboratory for new-generation adaptable systems of wireless communication.
